November Meeting: Reading Wood Grain with Tom Caspar

“Go with the grain.” That’s what we all hear about working wood. But how do you do it? How do you figure out which way the grain goes? Well, that’s what this meeting is about. The process is not as obvious as you might think, but the stakes are high. You don’t want to cut deep gouges in a board by planing in the wrong direction.
We’ll also go into a unique method of marking up and holding a board for jointing. This method, developed with the aid of a dozen students, guarantees that you will remove the least amount of wood possible, using the fewest passes, in order to make a board flat.
Tom Caspar is a founding member of the Guild and a lifelong professional woodworker. He currently teaches furnituremaking one-on-one at his studio in Minneapolis.
